Hearing & Beyond in Vietnam
Hearing & Beyond in Vietnam is a small, privately funded NGO that assists Deaf & Hard of Hearing children in Hội An. Despite Hội An having a population of 100,000 people, there is no schooling available for these children. This is where Hearing & Beyond in Vietnam has found a niche. In Việt Nam there are approximately 200,000 children under the age of eighteen with hearing loss. There are very limited numbers of schools available for hearing impaired children in Việt Nam. Because hearing testing at birth is not common, coupled with the limited access to modern audiology technology, early intervention is difficult to carry out.
Our belief and mission
With the aim of assisting hearing impaired children in Hội An and breaking the poverty cycle, the project was founded by Mái McCann in 2008. Mái firmly believes that all children deserve an education. In such a short space of time, we have been privileged to watch the changes that have occurred in these young lives. Hearing & Beyond in Vietnams Mission is to provide a high quality education to hearing impaired children in Hội An, to assist them to become integral members of their community and to raise awareness and understanding of the difficulties hearing impaired children and their families face on a daily basis.
Hearing & Beyond in Vietnam School
Our childens ages range from three to twelve years old. We have ten children on our waiting list. Unfortunately these children cannot start school until we can find sponsorships for them. Our children study speech, sign language, reading, writing and mathematics under the guidance of two full-time teachers and one assistant. With the small number of children we have per class, Hearing & Beyond in Vietnam offers the best learning environment for hearing impaired children in the Hội An district. Our students’ progress is outstanding and we are committed to maintaining this high level of education.
